| How is it treated? |
|
There are two main and different views regarding the treatment of a ruptured Achilles tendon. One side advocates surgery with early rehabilitation while the other means that non-surgery is a better option. Both sides have their pros and cons; Patients who have surgery followed by early rehabilitation will most likely regain full movement and function of the tendon but, there is a risk for complications such as infections and wound problems that may delay the healing process. Patients who instead of surgery are treated with a cast, brace, splint, walking boot or other device that keep the lower leg from moving, will most likely have a tendon that heals but it may not be as strong as before the injury and therefore the risk for re-rupture is higher. Artelon® Tissue Reinforcement can be of great benefit in cases where the tendon is re-ruptured or, in bad condition. The Artelon® implant is folded around the repaired tendon serving as reinforcement of the tendon tissue. |
