Rotator cuff tears Print

Do you have patients with rotator cuff injuries where you are less certain that the sutures will be able to maintain the repaired injury? Do you think there is an imminent risk of re-rupture?

Repairing massive, full thickness rotator cuff tendon tears is challenging, especially with a frayed tendon caused by degeneration or a failed primary surgery. The failure rate for repair of rotator cuff tears is high. Failure rates between 13% and 68% have been reported.

A reinforcement to support the primary suture repair could assist in making the first repair the best repair possible.

Most patches available on the market are made from human or animal tissue. These patches have good initial strength. However, several of them degrade within a few months. Due to the relatively fast degradation they may not provide sufficient reinforcement during the healing process.

Other devices, that degrade slowly, have been associated with the presence of foreign-body giant cells, chronic inflammation, and/or the accumulation of dense poorly organized fibrous tissue. Artelon® demonstrates unsurpassed implant biocompatibility with minimal tissue reactions and encapsulation.

Sutures, used to repair the tear, and sutures or bone anchors, used to attach the tissue to the bone, provide mechanical strength for the tendon repair. Artelon® Tissue Reinforcement is sutured over torn tissue as reinforcement of sutures or suture anchors. The implant degrades slowly and maintains its strength and elasticity over several years providing long term support of the soft tissue while being a scaffold for host tissue ingrowth.

Artelon® Tissue Reinforcement is used in general surgical procedures for reinforcement of soft tissue where weakness exists. Artelon® Tissue Reinforcement is also used for reinforcement of soft tissues that are repaired by sutures or suture anchors, during tendon repair surgery including reinforcement of rotator cuff, Achilles, patellar, biceps and quadriceps.

Benifits:

  • Support for soft tissue throughout the entire healing process, the Artelon® fibers have approximately 50% of initial tensile strength after 4 years
  • Host tissue infiltration and integration with surrounding tissue
  • Proven biocompatibility – synthetic and safe
  • Excellent suture retention strength and easy to cut and handle
