How do you prevent an insufficient result when suturing a ruptured or even re-ruptured Achilles tendon?
The degradable Artelon® implant is folded around the repaired tendon serving as reinforcement of the tendon tissue. The implant degrades slowly and maintains its strength and elasticity over several years providing long term support of the tendon.
Most patches available on the market are made from human or animal tissue. These patches have good initial strength. However, several of them degrade within a few months. Fast degradation does not provide sufficient reinforcement during the healing process.
Other devices made from human or animal tissue that degrade slowly, have been associated with encapsulation leading to foreign-body giant cells, chronic inflammation, and/or the accumulation of dense poorly organized fibrous tissue. Artelon® demonstrates proven biocompatibility with minimal risk of tissue reactions
Artelon® Tissue Reinforcement
Artelon® Tissue Reinforcement is used for reinforcement of soft tissues that are repaired by sutures or suture anchors, during tendon repair surgery including reinforcement of Achilles, rotator cuff, patellar, biceps and quadriceps.Artelon® Tissue Reinforcement is also used in general surgical procedures for reinforcement of soft tissue where weakness exists.
Artelon® Tissue Reinforcement reinforces soft tissue and provides a degradable scaffold that is incorporated into the patient’s own tissue.
Benefits:
- Support for soft tissue throughout the entire healing process, the Artelon® Tissue Reinforcement have approximately 50% of initial tensile strength after 4 years
- Host tissue infiltration and integration with surrounding tissue
- Proven biocompatibility – synthetic and safe
- Excellent suture retention strength and easy to cut and handle
